Exhibition: From May 1 to June 15, the Contact Gallery (80 Spadina Ave., unit 310) is literally filled with photographs assembled by Erik Kessels. For his installation, 24 Hours in Photography, the Dutch artist downloaded and printed every picture uploaded over a 24-hour period by users of the Flickr photo-sharing website, to demonstrate how the Internet’s superfluity allows images to “exist simultaneously as precious memories and paper detritus.”

Celebration Square Mississauga

Today is a fine spring day. I escaped work and drove to the city centre called Celebration Square in Mississauga. Its a huge public space where people park themselves on nice days and lots of activities go on during the summer.

I took out the Vivitar USW to take some shots, it is amazing in bright sunlight. Also took some shots with my phone. These are a phone shots processed in Photoscape with a Agfa film fliter. This an amazing free software that I have on my office PC. All my photoshop software is at home on my iMac and the Macbook.

I got one of the 120 rolls developed. Ultrafine Xtreme 400 in D76 stock for 5.5 min at 20C.

Issues here:

1- there is some sort of light leak going on with my hassey back. I had to crop out the edges a bit to make this image look presentable. I have some seals lying around but I don’t want to mess things up by doing it myself. The problem is that I seem to have this issues with some of the shots and not all of them. In this case, however, the light leaks were on all of the frames. Now i have to look for someone to service my hassey backs… (the other one leaves a lot of spacing between frames)…. :-(

2- This is a newer batch of ultrafine 400 that i ordered. The quality of the emulsion is not as good as the one i had ordered in 2011. There were lots of areas where it was off the acetate. I had to do a big spotting job on it in photoshop (thank God for photoshop). Nevertheless, the film continues to have good reciprocity.

I still have the other roll todevelop, let’s hope it’s not as disappointing….

list of things to do:

1- roll up some kentmere 100 bought last year, still unpacked. also roll up some double X

2- develop the two 120 rolls sitting in the fridge

3- hang up some frames in the basement (gallery project)

4 - try out some more flash/shadows/sheers shots…

Nick seeks the light

This is from the very first roll that i ever developed in Feb 2011. Its Kodak Tmax-400 in HC 110 B. I found the whole process challenging but exhilirating. At that time I had the Canon Eos Elan II, an excellent camera that i had to retire because the latch on the film compartment broke. My first time developing was way better than some of my later experiments.

since then I have tried various developers and films and methods, the latest being the two bath diafine. its been an interesting journey both in terms of the cameras i have acquired and the films i have used.
